Iron Bridge

Parque de La Isla

The technology of the iron put at the disposal of the rail infrastructures constructive techniques that, until then, had not been necessary.

The iron bridge over the Guadiana is the maximum exponent of this type of architecture in Mérida. It has a length of 605 meters consisting of 11 sections of 55 meters each made with lattice beams of the "Linville" type. It rests on stone pillars whose sides perpendicular to the current of the river are finished slightly curved to avoid erosion.

The bridge was inaugurated in 1883 as part of the Mérida-Sevilla railway line.
