Santiaguista Conventual

Plaza del Rastro, 12

The Order of Saint James built the “Casa de la Encomienda” on the north corner of the Alcazaba. In the 16th century, in rotation with the village of Calera de León, this building was for a brief period of time, the see of the priory, giving it its final structure which is the one we see today. From the Plaza del Rastro we see the sturdy façade of the Conventual made of granite ashlars, behind the turret of a flanking tower which, up until not so many years ago, was part of the structure of a drying place for hams.

You can enter this building through a semicircular arched gate. On the lower part, at the end of some stairs, we see a door which seems late-gothic because of the presence of beaded arches, so it is older than the first one. A keep was added to the main body of the Conventual which is a solid turret with only one tiny opening. At the back of this tower we see the façade of what used to be the priory church, now reformed into an assembly hall.

This building is now the seat of the Presidency of the Junta of Extremadura.
